Long Beach Transit will debut its electric bus fleet on its premiere "Passport" route. The route services downtown Long Beach's finest attractions and destinations, including the iconic Queen Mary, Aquarium of the Pacific, Pine Avenue, City Place Mall, The Pike at Rainbow Harbor, Convention Center, Shoreline Village, and many downtown hotels. WAVE will be outfitting 10 electric buses from BYD Motors with WAVE's charging system. There will be two 50 kW charging pads prominently located at the Queen Mary.
WAVE and BYD will begin delivering the WAVE powered electric buses by the end of 2013. In May 2013, BYD Motors offically opened its Electric Bus Manufacturing Facility and Energy Module Manufacturing Plant in Lancaster, California to service this project and build their North American operations. The Long Beach project represents the most significant foray into electric buses by a major metropolitan transit agency in the United States. WAVE expects it to clearly demonstrate the viability of electric buses when they include the range extending WAVE charger.
